Diet and skin aging - myth or truth?

The aging of the organs occurs throughout lifetime, but the skin is the organ that shows obvious signs of it. Therefore, in addition to the protective role against harmful factors from the external environment, it also has a huge aesthetic charge. Through skin and hair we communicate non-verbally, which determines its role for our self-esteem.

Molecular mechanism of skin aging

Aging is characterized by the accumulation of damaged macromolecules among the cells, impaired stem cell capacity for tissue regeneration and physiological integrity. The two types of skin aging (chronological and photoaging) have different mechanisms and symptoms. Chronological aging occurs after a certain age and depends on the genetics, race and involves a certain skin area. Photoaging is due to prolonged exposure to ultraviolet radiation. UVA rays penetrate the skin in depth and damage the reticular structures in the dermis (collagen and elastin). UVB rays affect keratinocytes (the main cells in the epidermis) by forming oxygen free radicals, damaging DNA and mutations in the cells.

Diet and anti age

Nutrition is necessary for every biological process in the skin. Our eating habits can have a beneficial effect on its health or speed up its aging. A team of scientist confirmed that properly combined macro- and micronutrients have some effect on delaying the chronological and photoaging of the skin.

Imbalance in trace elements (iron, iodine, zinc, copper, selenium) impairs skin immunity and anti-inflammatory capacity. Zinc, for example, is essential for the proper differentiation of epidermal cells. Selenium is a powerful antioxidant, the low level of which reduces the fight against free radicals in the skin. The element copper is related to the formation of the extracellular matrix (the environment in which the cells are located) in the dermis, and its balance is needed to improve skin elasticity.

Hypovitaminosis causes a number of skin conditions. Their main effect is due to their powerful antioxidant capacity, neutralizing free radicals formed by UV radiation. Vitamin C is also essential for collagen synthesis.

The diverse physiological role of proteins defines them as essential nutrients in our daily diet. They are involved in the construction and repair of tissues, mediate physiological functions and supply energy. Skin renewal, which takes about 28 days, is due to their sufficient concentration. Collagen and eleastin, which are the structural elements of our skin, are among the most important skin proteins.

The best source of these nutrients is food. Organic, clean food. Another important feature is the way it is prepared, becaus fried food leads to inflammation.
